Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour (or gluten-free flour)
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 packet active dry yeast (2 1/4 tsp)
  • 3/4 cup warm milk
  • 1/4 cup melted unsalted butter (or coconut oil)
  • 1 large egg (or flax egg)
  • 1 teaspoon red food coloring (or beet powder)
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 4 oz cream cheese (or vegan cream cheese)
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 tablespoon milk

Instructions

  1. Warm the milk to about 105–115°F and stir in the yeast; let sit for about 5 minutes until foamy.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, sugar, and salt. Add the yeast mixture, melted butter, egg, red food coloring, and vanilla; mix until a rough dough forms.
  3. Knead on a floured surface for about 5 minutes until smooth. Place in an oiled bowl and let rise for about an hour until doubled in size.
  4. Roll out dough into a rectangle (12×9 inches) and spread with softened butter. Sprinkle evenly with brown sugar and cinnamon.
  5. Roll tightly from one edge into a log; slice into rolls and place them in a greased baking dish.
  6. Let rolls rise again for about 30 minutes until puffy.
  7. Preheat oven to 350°F and bake for approximately 20–25 minutes until set.
  8. Prepare frosting by beating together cream cheese, powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla; drizzle over warm rolls.
